Social Media Education At Kotei R/C JHS

On 11th July, the DIGI Girlies Guild team brought a wave of digital enlightenment to Kotei R/C JHS with an engaging outreach session on social media education. The visit was part of the Guild’s ongoing mission to equip basic school students with digital knowledge and guide them toward responsible, impactful use of online platforms.

The session, led by Miss Gabriella, was designed to simplify the concept of social media and help students see its benefits and risks. She explained how platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and LinkedIn function, highlighting both their benefits and potential risks. The discussion also touched on how these tools can support learning, build creativity, and even open doors to future career opportunities.

Miss Gabriella broke down the topic in relatable terms, explaining that social media isn't about entertainment or chatting with friends, it’s also a tool for learning, creating, connecting, and expressing ideas. Students learned how various platforms could serve different educational and professional purposes. For example, WhatsApp can be used for group learning and sharing assignments; LinkedIn can introduce them to mentorship and career opportunities; and YouTube offers an endless supply of tutorials to help them understand difficult subjects.

The students eagerly asked questions, curious about how to stay safe online, how to use social media for learning, and even how they could become content creators and earn from it or advocates for their communities. Their active participation showed just how relevant and necessary this digital education is.

Two students, in particular, stood out during the interviews that followed. Miss Christabel Opoku shared how the session made her realize that social media can help her become more creative. “It helps us to be creative and enables us to gain global knowledge,” she said with a bright smile. Another student, Miss Emmanuella Acheampong, highlighted the power of communication stating that “Social media helps us to communicate and share information with others.”

Their reflections underscore an important point: when given the right knowledge and guidance, students can see social media not as a distraction, but as a tool for growth.

The Digi Girlies team also touched on the positive and negative effects of social media. On the positive side, students can access global knowledge, collaborate with others, build skills, and even prepare for future careers in fields like digital marketing, content creation, and graphic design. Real-life scenarios were shared, such as a student finding a scholarship through LinkedIn or a science club using Instagram to successfully advocate for lab resources.

On the other hand, students were cautioned about potential dangers, such as cyberbullying, misinformation, and privacy risks. These discussions helped them understand the importance of using social media wisely and responsibly.

In the end, what stood out most was how eager the students were to apply that knowledge they have learnt. From the questions they asked to the insights they shared, it was clear that, they’re ready for the digital future, and thanks to Digi Girlies Guild, they’re stepping into it with clarity and confidence.

The Guild extends its appreciation to Kotei R/C JHS for the warm welcome and looks forward to continuing these vital conversations in more schools across the country.

To empower more young girls through digital education, we’re inviting partners and sponsors to join us in driving this mission forward. Together, we can create lasting impact and open up more opportunities for the next generation.
